16:48:58 <cha-cha> Hi, I am writing a proposal for GSoC
16:49:02 <cha-cha> need some help
16:51:12 <nhnt11> cha-cha: hello!
16:52:28 * nhnt11 can try to help
17:04:55 <cha-cha> nhnt11: So I have seen the bug on Brainstorming page, and I am interested
17:05:51 <cha-cha> nhnt11: And I am sure I could write a good proposal, But I have some doubts before starting.

17:43:46 <nhnt11> cha-cha: please go ahead and ask any questions you have
17:43:52 <nhnt11> someone will answer sooner or later
17:44:04 <nhnt11> but if you just say "I have some questions" and we reply 30 minutes later, it'll take you longer to get your answers
17:44:09 <nhnt11> :)
17:48:36 <cha-cha> nhnt11: So, What is exact selection process of GSoC
17:49:06 <cha-cha> and If I write a good proposal and the mentor likes it, what are my odds of getting selected
17:49:38 --> sukil has joined #instantbird
17:50:16 <cha-cha> and after writing and submitting the proposal, will doing some work in mozilla increase my chances of getting selected, because I havent done any yet.
17:50:29 <cha-cha> These are my questions as of now :)

18:25:01 <nhnt11> cha-cha: whether you're selected depends on a few things. Not considering anything related to the actual proposal/project, I can think of: a) good communication skills, and b) capacity to search/read/learn without a ton of spoonfeeding (though it's important to ask for help when you need it!)
18:25:24 <nhnt11> you can demonstrate both these things by using Instantbird and finding/fixing small bugs
18:26:39 <-- clokep_work has quit (Ping timeout: 121 seconds)
18:27:38 <nhnt11> for the proposal itself, I'd say a few things are important e.g. your understanding of the scope of the project, identifying milestones, predicting the complexity of each milestone, predicting possible pitfalls on the way.... and anything else you can think of!
18:27:58 <nhnt11> I'm giving you this advice as someone who did two summer of code projects, not as a mentor/evaluator.
